 The Lap-Band® is an adjustable band placed near the top of the stomach, which controls the speed at which food is able to enter the stomach cavity. It is controlled by increasing or reducing saline solution through an infusion port placed under the skin, and can be adjusted over time. Introduced in Europe in 1993, and approved by the United States FDA in 2001, the Lap-Band® is a less invasive alternative to the gastric bypass surgery.
