Weight loss surgery is not a quick fix for obesity, but is rather a tool that is used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise. According to the National Institutes of Health (NHI), a WLS candidate must meet the following general criteria:

  • BMI equal to or greater than 40 (use our BMI Calculator to find your Body Mass Index)
  • BMI equal to or greater than 35 with major comorbidity (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea - directly related to the candidate's weight)
  • Tried and failed at using non-surgical approaches (e.g. diet, exercise, managed weight loss, etc.)
  • Psychologically/mentally stable

These are general criteria, and there may be more depending on your doctor, medical conditions, insurance, and health history. Be sure to make an informed decision by discussing all possible options with your primary care doctor.
